It´s tropical location, weather conditions, fertile soil, and topographical diversity and climate zones make Colombia the perfect location for agricultural activity, including oil palm.
Colombia has an agricultural frontier of 44 million hectares, of which only 15% are cultivated; out of this percentage, only 500,000 hectares are planted with oil palm, none of them are found in or near the Amazon rainforest. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, Colombia is one of eight countries with the possibility of increasing agricultural production within the existing agricultural frontier without deforestation, helping to reduce the demand for food.
Colombia is the fourth producer of palm oil in the world and the first in the western hemisphere. Over 68 palm centers or “núcleos” in Spanish, work together with more than 6.000 oil palm growers in Colombia, generating more than 177.000 jobs, impacting positively and directly in rural development and wealth. 85% are small growers who have less than 50 hectares. A high percentage of them are part of different Strategic Oil Palm Productive Alliances in the country.
Oil palm crops in Colombia are divided in four main zones: North, East, Central and South-West. These zones group 161 oil palm producing municipalities of Colombia in 21 of the 32 departments Colombia has.
LOCATION
Colombia is located near the equator in northwest South America. Colombia borders to the north with the Caribbean Sea, to the south with Peru and Ecuador, to the east with Venezuela and Brazil, and to the west with Panama and the Pacific Ocean. Colombia has a privileged location because has two coasts, having maritime access to the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean, also, due to its location, Colombia has easy communication with all continents as it is in the middle of the Americas.
TIMEZONE
Colombia only has one time zone and a difference with the Greenwich meridian of -5 hours throughout its territory (UTC -5). Due to its proximity to the Ecuador line, there are no schedule changes during the year. Colombia shares the same time zone as Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Jamaica, Cuba and some cities of the United States and Canada. Here, you can see the hour in real-time.
WEATHER
Colombia has a little changing of climate all year round. This is because the country is located near the Equator, where the sun rises and sets at the almost at same time all year round, unlike almost every other country in the world. Colombia only has dry seasons (from December to January and July to August) and rainy seasons (from April to May and October to November), benefiting oil palm growing.
The topographical diversity of Colombia provides a huge variety of landscapes, biodiversity and thermal floors.
